I slept through most of the day of surgery, and the day after. I wasn't
very hungry for the first day or two. I found that the creamy energy
drinks such as Boost (available at Target and Walmart) would quell the
minor hunger, and were very fast and easy to consume. I've tried several
other energy drinks, but I liked Boost the best for recovery. Many of
the other energy drinks are citrus based (more acidic and what I
normally prefer), but the creamy ones sit better in your tummy if you're
not eating much else.
Even better than Boost, was a couple of Meal Replacement Formulas
(MRF) that had been given to me as part of joining a gym. They were a
better alternative to Boost because they were nutritionally complete.
MRFs are available at most gyms and health food stores. They are sold in
single serving packets containing a powder that is mixed with milk.
Having flexible straws made life so much easier. They're especially
good for frequent middle-of-the-night sips if you have to breathe
through your mouth. With a straw in a lidded cup, there's no worry
about spilling.
Some easy-to-eat foods for feeding a nascent nose, with softest fun
stuff first:
- pudding or tapioca
- yogurt
- Jello
- ice cream, sorbet, or Italian ice
- popsicles – good for soothing an
irritated throat if you were intubated,
- applesauce (or any fruit puree)
- cream of whatever soup
- mashed potatoes
- polenta
- rice
- stove-top stuffing
- pasta
- well-cooked chicken
